It’s impossible to examine creative leadership without acknowledging the systems in which it operates. Creative leadership calls on leaders to challenge the status quo and dismantle oppressive, toxic structures.
But how can leaders effectively do this while still functioning within these very systems?
For genuine paradigm shifts in leadership, we must also build alternative systems and organizational structures where creative leaders can truly thrive.
Through my volunteer work with Extinction Rebellion Global, I had my first encounter with a Self-Organizing System. This experience was transformative. It showed me that alternative ways of organizing ourselves, outside of traditional hierarchical structures, are not just possible—they are essential for collective progress.
To move forward, we need to reimagine existing organizational frameworks where leadership is not centralized but distributed. In these systems, decision-making is driven by consensus, and leadership becomes a collective effort, empowering every individual to contribute.
We must also redefine creativity. Too often, creativity is positioned as something exclusive, separating “creatives” from others. In reality, creativity is an innate human capacity that should unite us. It shouldn’t segregate people but foster collaboration and shared innovation, allowing everyone to participate in creating meaningful change.
